Music Box Sessions | Joan Blasco | Just The Two Of Us
This week's Music Box Session features HND2 student Joan Blasco performing 'Just The Two Of Us'. Joan says "I’ve recently started performing Just the Two of Us live, and I’m absolutely loving the freedom it gives me to explore, jam, and dive into improvisation. In this arrangement, I’ve wrote an instrumental intro and outro to really showcase the grand piano as instrumental. Throughout the piece, I keep the harmony mostly simple and open, which allows me to focus on delivering a more expressive and engaging vocal performance". The Music Box Sessions is our award winning, long running, weekly series highlighting the talent and creativity of students from Edinburgh College’s Music department. From classical ensembles to pop bands and solo artists, each performance is professionally filmed and recorded by lecturer Scott Hannah and learning assistant Sarah May. The sessions give students essential studio experience and a platform to share their music. Featuring a diverse range of genres, the sessions offer a glimpse into the vibrant music scene at the college. Be sure to check out new performances every Friday live at 5pm.

Music Box Sessions | Fingertraps | Eclipse
This week's Music Box Session features Fingertraps performing their original song 'Eclipse'. HND student Joan on keys and vocals say "I came up with the main riff during a jam. We wanted to play something with modal vibes, somewhere between the atmosphere of Kind of Blue by Miles Davis and Bill Evans spacious, smooth, and very open. At the same time, we were inspired by the hip-hop and neo-soul sound of 90's Madlib, but always keeping our own vibe as a band. The idea was to create rich harmonies and leave space in the arrangement so guitar, trumpets and piano can take expressive solos. The outro is built around a long bass line, inspired by the grooves of Yussef Dayes. It becomes a moment for Xabier to really explore and amaze us rhythmically. The extended 9th chords keep the harmony open and floating, and the vocal harmonies help to enhance the synesthetic feeling of the lyrics. The concept of the lyrics moves somewhere between the astronomical idea of an eclipse and a metaphor about the shadow of power and control from elites." Music Box Sessions | Joan and Ben | Agua de Beber
This week's Music Box Session features Joan and Ben performing a cover of Antônio Carlos Jobim's 'Agua de Beber'. Joan says "Joan & Ben are an Edinburgh-based duo in love with Latin jazz and the colours of Latin American music. Our sound is a journey through Spanish flamenco, Cuban soul, Brazilian grooves and beyond. “Agua de Beber,” the iconic bossa nova by Antônio Carlos Jobim, is one of our favourite tunes to make our own. We keep the heart of the original, the Portuguese lyrics and that unmistakable bossa rhythm , while adding a smooth English touch inspired by Sinatra’s version. Then we loosen it up with a freer, more playful energy influenced by Al Jarreau. The result? A fresh, vibrant take that stays true to bossa nova, but speaks with our own Latin and musical voice." Music Box Sessions | Shifter | You
This week’s Music Box Session features Shifter, performing their original track ‘You’. The band is made up of HND Music students Dave (bass/vocals) and Jay (guitar/vocals), alongside Charlie on guitar, who’s currently completing a Joinery apprenticeship at the college, and Jacob on drums. The band are performing at King Tut’s in Glasgow tomorrow night (7th Feb) so get along if you can! Dave says “The song is called 'You' and is really just about being addicted to something/someone, never really knew who or what it's aimed towards but the words just came out when putting lyrics to it so hopefully someone can find relation to them. Our influences stem from mainly alt rock bands like well known groups like Radiohead and Wunderhorse to other bands that aren't too known like Radio Free Alice and Julie. In addition grunge groups influence us although it might not seem it so much.” Give them a follow to keep up with their latest gigs and releases! https://www.instagram.com/shifter_band/ The Music Box Sessions is our award winning, long running, weekly series highlighting the talent and creativity of students from Edinburgh College’s Music department. Music Box Sessions | Dry Eyes | Juniper
This week's Music Box Session features Dry Eyes with an original song 'Juniper'. Dry Eyes is the project of HND student Louie, who created and sings on the piece. He is joined by fellow HND students Dom, Daniel, Finn, Brodie, Gemma and Lauren, as well as Tanith and Dylan. Louie says "This song is heavily influenced by the sound of Black Country, New Road, at least initially. The use of rhythm and instruments, particularly the saxophone led me to trying to experiment more with what sounds I can use when creating. The odd 5/4 time signature was adopted as a challenge as well."
