Music Box Sessions Season 2 | Arthur Hill
This week's Music Box Session features degree student Arthur Hill performing a solo piano piece of his own composition; 'September'. Arthur says - "'September' is an original composition inspired by the work of contemporary pianists such as Yann Tiersen and George Winston; the repeating left-hand patterns found on Tiersen's 'Eusa' album and Winston's 'December', particularly influenced the middle section of 'September', in 7/8 time." Music Box Sessions Season 2 | Eva Sainero
This week's Music Box Session features degree student Eva Sainero performing an original piece - 'Darkness'. Eva says - "This tune was written during lockdown when I was feeling a bit trapped. It's about those moments in life when we feel in a dark cave and it's difficult to see outside the box but, eventually, we manage to realise that there's a better place for us. Artists like Agnes Obel or Fredrika Stahl were a big inspiration for me when writing this tune." Music Box Sessions Season 2 | luckylongcat
This week's Music Box Session features one of our students, luckylongcat performing a lovely cover of 'Since I Saw Vienna by Wilbur Soot'. "Since I saw Vienna by Wilbur Soot is a song that describes the feeling of constantly travelling and being lonely while doing so. Soot describes himself as being a “big mover” and “never staying in the same house for more than a year” and translated the feeling of never fully settling down in one place through his lyrics, while contrasting this distressing feeling with calming acoustic guitar." Music Box Sessions Season 2 | Annette and Callum Chapman
This week's Music Box Session features lecturer Annette Chapman and her husband Callum performing their original, 'Eilean Mor'. "This song Eilean Mor (Scots Gaelic for Big Island) was actually written while sitting in the ruins of the main hall at Finlaggan on Islay, the ancient seat of the Lords of the Isles. It's a place where the silence is so all encompassing that you can imagine the voices reaching out through time and the story of the song grew from that." Music Box Sessions Season 2 | The Robin Robertson Blues Band
This week, Music Box Sessions features The Robin Robertson Blues Band performing their song Angry Bones. The band includes lecturer Annette Chapman, former Edinburgh College guitar tutor Robin Robertson and Edinburgh College music graduate Ryan Cairney. Check out their social media to see their upcoming shows and catch them live! "Robin and Annette worked on this song together, Annette read the phrase "it was as if he had angry bones" in a book and wanted to use that in a song, she says "Robin had a riff that would fit, it started off with a straight rhythm which took it too far away from the Blues sound that is our signature so Robin chose to use the slide in it with the dotted rhythm and it just worked. By the time the rest of the band added their take on it, it just fits our style." She goes on to say "We've all met those people that seem to be angry at even the smallest thing - they have angry bones and this song just shines a light on that in a small way"" The Music Box Sessions, produced by learning assistant Sarah May and lecturer Scott Hannah, is a weekly recording session created with the intention of giving students more studio experience and showcasing some of the amazing musicians, ensembles and bands studying at Edinburgh College.
